Course Description

Includes a voucher to take the NHA Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT) national certification exam upon completion.

Phlebotomy is a fast starting point to launch your medical career. Experience as a phlebotomist will help open opportunities for promotions and advancement. Phlebotomy Technicians are critical team members at hospitals, diagnostic laboratories and blood donor centers. Jobs are also projected to grow 27 percent, much faster than other healthcare-related fields. Phlebotomy is more than just taking blood. Laboratories rely on phlebotomy technicians to collect quality samples from patients to produce quality lab results. To do this, a phlebotomy technician must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence with patients while drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe, and reliable manner.

The phlebotomy training program is broken into three segments: 60 hours of online lectures/exercises and 100 hours of externships (must have 100 successful, unaided blood collections including venipunctures and skin punctures). Students will be trained to collect, transport, handle and process blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis using venipuncture and micro collection techniques.

The Phlebotomy Training program prepares students for multiple practice roles and national certifications. (PLEASE NOTE that the National Association and Certification Exams are not included.) As an entry-level clinical profession this program is ideal for students in the allied health care field. The National Certification examinations require that students should have a high school diploma or completed the General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

The exams student could be eligible for include:

  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • National Healthcareer Associations Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT)

Externship Protocol

PLEASE NOTE the following caveat regarding all externships at this time: Due to partially relaxed COVID-19 guidelines, some Physical Externships may now be available! If at the end of the online portion of training, a Physical Externship is not available, a Virtual Externship will still be used in its stead. Virtual Externships are consistent with meeting the certification guidelines and are reviewed by faculty or preceptors.

This practice will remain in place until all COVID-19 guidelines have been removed and the healthcare sites will allow students to attend with patients and practice skills without hesitation.

Description:
Externship is a work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts under direct supervision of the clinical professional. This work-experience course will train students in multiple skills to help the provider carry out procedures, interview and care for patients, perform basic lab tests and administer medications. Students will be competent in both clinical and administrative procedures.

Meeting Location: As assigned by Clinical Externship Coordinator. Externship hours are Monday-Sunday beginning as early as 6am and can go till 11pm. It is expected for students to be flexible with times and days for clinical sites to accommodate students. Externship placements occur after successful completion of the course and student acknowledges all guidelines stipulated in an externship application. Although it`s rare, students must commit up to a 1 hour (one way) commute or longer depending on student location and are responsible for any expenses associate with such. The student will also be responsible for any expenses (if any) associated with externship onboarding requirements such as background checks & drug screens.

Attendance Policy: Students must attend 100% of clinical hours in order to pass competencies.

Please note: Course of study may be completed earlier than indicated.
