Contact Hours: 300 (an estimated time frame devoted to a course of study from start to finish that can vary from student to student)
Includes a voucher to take the PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) national certification exam upon completion.
The Professional Pharmacy Technician program is an introductory course that is designed to teach students the fundamentals and particulars of becoming a pharmacy technician. This class introduces students to various pharmacy practice settings and covers drug classes, basic physiology, drug interactions and daily pharmacy operations. This program trains individuals to effectively assist in pharmaceutical preparations and complete daily required tasks in any pharmacy environment, although on the job training is still a part of pharmacy training. This course also is designed to introduce students interested in pharmacy to the basic concepts of pharmacy calculations. Students will have the opportunity to understand and practice math concepts and calculations needed to become a certified pharmacy technician.
CAREER OVERVIEW
Pharmacy technicians are entry-level personnel that work in many different pharmacy settings within the healthcare industry. They assist the pharmacist as their right-hand person in many different pharmacy practice settings. Some of the main duties of a pharmacy technician are to enter patient data and information into the computer system to process prescriptions. They are also responsible for dispensing commercially available medications, compounding specialty orders, and/or preparing intravenous medications. They refer any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist. Pharmacy techs work in a wide variety of practice settings, including community pharmacies, hospitals, the military, in-home health care settings, long term care facilities, mail service pharmacies, managed health care organizations, and educational programs. Most importantly, pharmacy technicians are responsible for creating a safe and professional environment for their patients.
Pharmacy Technicians with Contemporary Compounding training can work in a whole array of locations including, but not limited to:

Externship Protocol
PLEASE NOTE the following caveat regarding all externships at this time: Due to partially relaxed COVID-19 guidelines, some Physical Externships may now be available! If at the end of the online portion of training, a Physical Externship is not available, a Virtual Externship will still be used in its stead. Virtual Externships are consistent with meeting the certification guidelines and are reviewed by faculty or preceptors.
This practice will remain in place until all COVID-19 guidelines have been removed and the healthcare sites will allow students to attend with patients and practice skills without hesitation.
National Association and Certification Exams -
The Pharmacy Technician program prepares students for multiple practice roles and national certifications. As an entry-level clinical profession this program is ideal for students in the allied health care field. The National Certification examinations require that students should have a high school diploma or completed the General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
