Course Description

Includes a voucher to take the NHA Medical Assistant Certification (CCMA) national certification exam upon completion. 

As a Clinical Medical Assistant you would be involved in the comprehensive medical billing and setup of patients for medical facilities. You would be involved in the practice and management of a medical office in areas such as receptionist duties, telephone techniques, appointment scheduling, verbal and written communications, medical and non-medical record management. You will also learn basic patient setup for triage care. Common clinical practice duties include performing routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices of physicians and other health practitioners running smoothly. The duties of medical assistants vary from office to office, depending on the location and size of the practice and the practitioner`s specialty.

Clinical duties vary according to state law and include: taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination.

Program Details:

The program prepares students to work with clinical coordinators or practice administrators and,

•Perform primary nursing procedures under supervision of physician or physician assistant
•Assist physician and physician assistant in exam rooms
•Escort patients to exam rooms, interviews patients, measure vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and document all information in patient’s chart
•Give instructions to patients as instructed by physician or physician assistant
•Ensure all related reports, labs and information is filed is available in patients’ medical records prior to their appointment
•Keep exam rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments, and prepare sterilization as required
•Take telephone messages and provide feedback and answers to patient/physician/pharmacy calls
•Triage and process messages from patients and front office staff to physicians and physician assistants
•Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid change, etc.)
•All other duties as assigned by clinical coordinator or practice administrator

Keep in mind that the responsibilities of medical assistants will also vary based on practice location, as the legal scope of practice varies by state. For example, some states require medical assistants who perform certain procedures, such as blood draws, ultrasounds or EKGs, to have license to do so, while some states do not. Many practices leave it up to the physician to make decisions about a medical assistant’s scope of responsibility, since they are technically working under the license of the physician.

The Clinical Medical Assistant program prepares students for multiple practice roles and national certifications. As an entry-level clinical profession this program is ideal for students in the allied health care field. The National Certification examinations require that students should have a high school diploma or completed the General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
